BMW i Series Review: Best New Design
BMW i is a sub-brand of BMW Company founded in 2011 to the design and manufacture plug-in electric vehicles. The BMW Company’s initial plans call for release of 2-vehicles; i3 all-electric car and i8 plug-in hybrid. The Concept versions of both these vehicles were shown at 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Series production of the BMW Company i3 destined for retail customers began in Sep 2013, and the European bazaar launch took place in Nov 2013 with the 1st retail deliveries in the Germany. The BMW i8 was launched in the Germany in 2014. Around 17,800 units of both i models were sold during 2014. The US and the Germany are main markets for both models. The BMW’s “Project i” is a program created to the develop lightweight Eco-friendly urban electric car concepts designed to address the mobility and sustainability needs for the people who live in mega-cities. According to BMW Company, “Project i” has 3-phases. Mini E demonstration was the 1st phase of this project, and it was the followed by a similar field testing that began in Jan 2012 with BMW ActiveE all-electric vehicle. The ActiveE is based on BMW 1 Series Coupe and is built based on the lessons learned from Mini E trial. The last phase of “Project i” was the development of i3 and i8 electric cars.
Automaker expects that its 1st series production all-electric drive vehicle will help it achieve an overall fleet fuel economy (Fuel economy in automobiles) average of 6.63 L/100 km (35.5 mpg) by 2016, as mandated by the United States federal regulations. The BMW expects high volume sales of i3 to allow the BMW Company to continue selling several of its best-performance cars with low fuel economy in United States of America.
The BMW announced a new sub-brand, in Feb 2011, BMW i, to bazaar the vehicles produced under Project i. the BMW i vehicles are to be sold separately from the BMW or Mini. The 1st two production models are battery electric Mega City Vehicle, now called the BMW i3, and a plug-in hybrid called the BMW i8, which is production version of the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept unveiled at 2009 the Frankfurt Motor Show and has an all-electric range of 50 kilometers (31 mi). the Production of both plug-in electric cars was scheduled to start in Leipzig in 2013.
We knew it was only a matter of time before the BMW got into electric car game, but we never thought design of their 1st models would take idea so literally. BMW i Series includes 2-models that wouldn’t be out of place in a sci-fi flick the every-electric, rear wheel drive i3 hatchback, which offers 170 hp, seating for 4, a top speed of 93-mph, and a 0-60 time of under 8-seconds, and hybrid i8 coupe, which pairs an electric motor running the front wheels and a turbocharged 3-cylinder powering rears for every one wheel drive possibilities, limited range every-electric driving, a 0-60 time of under 5-seconds, and a perfect 50/50 weight distribution ratio. No word on whether production models will be as funky as the concepts.
